SPOILERS AHEAD!
So, Marvel Zombies, from what I understand, is sort of an extension from an episode that came out in the Marvel What If...? series. And What If...? is a show where anything can happen. When the whole multiverse thing really started, this show came out, and it's just different versions of the stories we know if certain aspects changed (alternate timelines). There was a zombies episode that talked about, you know, a zombie apocalypse, and it was very popular. There's also a comic. So, Marvel decided to release Marvel Zombies, which goes further into the whole 'what if there was a zombie apocalypse?' type of thing.
I just sat down and watched the entire thing. There's four episodes that are roughly about 30 minutes a piece. Honestly? Wow, I'm impressed. I'm not gonna lie to you: I did not go into it expecting what I got. No, I didn't think it would be bad. I liked the What If..? series. I never finished it. It wasn't like, 'oh my gosh, this is the most amazing thing ever.' But you know, it was fun. It was cute. But holy cow, the story throughout Marvel Zombies... It's just four episodes. That's what keeps amazing me. The storytelling and the details throughout PLUS the flow of everything is so magnificent to me. I thought the flow was incredible, and at the end of every single episode, I was hanging on the edge of my seat. It was so good. I'm just gonna run through each episode. So let's dive in, shall we?
Episode 1
The very first episode starts out, and I immediately thought Young Avengers. We see Kate Bishop, we've got Riri Williams, and we've got Kamala Khan. These are characters who are kind of forming the Young Avengers. You know, back when all these series started happening, people were piecing together Young Avengers. What are they gonna do? Are they gonna do it this way, this way, this way? There were multiple theories on team-ups and how they would bring the Young Avengers about. Now, are they the Young Avengers in this? No clue. My answer is probably not, but it's kind of cool to see Marvel Zombies start with these three characters already on a team together.
Zombie Hawkeye: love. I love that you still have sort of this relationship between Kate and Hawkeye, even though Hawkeye is a zombie and is trying to eat her brains. You can still see the respect that she has for him in the way that she is holding on to this trick arrow in the car. She has a little moment.
I do want to say I did love the animation right from the start. It's similar to what they've done already in What If...? I really enjoy that animation style a lot.
The F.R.I.D.A.Y. mention and the Tony Stark mention: love. Zombie Carol and Icarus fighting? That was really something; I did not expect to see Icarus. I was like, 'Okay, Eternals mentioned, thankfully,' because they never get mentioned anymore, frankly. So, it was kind of nice to see at least one member of the Eternals. I have to also talk about this quote from F.R.I.D.A.Y.. When Riri is telling F.R.I.D.A.Y. to go save Kamala, and F.R.I.D.A.Y. goes to return back to Riri, she says this quote, and it genuinely brought tears to my eyes. She says, "I lost my first owner, I won't lose another." She's referring to Tony Stark. And that ruined me for sure.
Also, Blade Knight?!! I was losing my mind, okay? I was so thankful. He is so cool and such an interesting character. Don't get me started on his action sequences. Every fight sequence of Blade was immaculate. Blade's character as a whole is just incredible. I loved Blade in Marvel Zombies. He was by FAR one of the coolest additions.
Family reunion (sorta): Yelena and Alexei and Milena all together, stop. The fam's all back together, except I was missing Natasha. That did bring some sadness, but I did like to see at least some of that family unit all together. Zombie Cap was a really good little like cameo, too. The fight between him and Alexei was so funny, so good, and it was definitely a highlight of the episode. But I have to say, Zombie Ghost was insane. Hello? When Ghost came out, I was losing it. That was awesome. It was incredible.
Then, there's Zombie Wanda who is TERRIFYING. Her character is so complex and powerful. She's so interesting.
Episode 2
Episode two, we see Katy and Shang-Chi. I was super excited to see them back because again, that's another Marvel project that we haven't seen anything from in a while. Even if it was an animated series, it was still good to see them again. It also served as a kind of reminder that there are all these moving pieces that hopefully, in the MCU canon, they are gonna bring back together. I'm assuming so, especially with this whole multiversal saga.
This episode was jam-packed. We got Wenwu, Agent Woo, Baron Zemo, and John Walker. It was just like banger after banger after banger after banger! EVERYBODY! We were introduced to a lot more characters.
I have to talk about Yelena's sacrifice. This is a trope, sort of, throughout the whole miniseries. You know, Riri sacrifices herself, and then you've got Melina. Melina tells Alexei, to go on and keep fighting. So then Alexei tells Yelena that they have to keep fighting for her. Well in this episode, Yelena sacrifices herself, and she tells Alexei that he's got to keep fighting. Looking ahead at episode three, Alexei ends up turning into a zombie, and Kamala does not want to fight him and is very distraught. She then says to him that she'll keep fighting for him. So it's kind of passed down. It's really sweet and touching.
Episode 3
Talk about another jam-packed episode! We see Peter Parker, and we see Scott Lang, the floating head with Doctor Strange's cloak. That was a great little moment again. I had totally forgotten about that storyline from the episode in the What If...? series. I love that they brought that back.
And then T'Challa. I was losing my mind. I deeply admire and respect the choice to not have T'Challa speak in the animation that we see. Peter Parker is narrating the story, and Peter is paraphrasing what T'Challa said during the flashback. I love the fact that they didn't hire somebody to be the voice actor for T'Challa. The fact that they didn't make T'Challa speak and have someone else speak for this character that we all know as Chadwick Boseman, to me, is another way of honoring his legacy and honoring him as a person. It served as a way of honoring him as that character because he really transformed that character and was the perfect Black Panther. I thought that was really, really well done that they didn't just try to hire somebody. Because yes, I know there's variants. Even the guy voicing Peter Parker isn't Tom Holland, so he's not MCU Peter Parker, but most of the other characters are voiced by their MCU actor. I mean, Elizabeth Olsen is in this, Florence Pugh's in this, Paul Rudd voices his character. I'm thankful that they didn't try to get somebody else for T'Challa because Chadwick Boseman did voice T'Challa in What If...? season one. It's just really sweet that they didn't try to replace him. We still sort of have that silence and reverence for him and how he portrayed that character. RIP Chadwick Boseman. He has touched lives of many, and we will never forget that.
Also, I do have to say that Zombie Thanos is frightening, terrifying. Then the Thor, Groot, and Rocket Infinity War entrance? Amazing. It was a little bit of a plot twist, though, for sure. I wrote in my notes, "He is inevitable indeed" about Thanos.
Of course, we've also got Valkyrie, and Wanda's tricks that she plays on the Asgardians. That was really well done. I loved that little twist. As mentioned earlier, this is the episode where Alexei turns into a zombie. It's very sad.
Thor helps the rest of the team. And then Nova Corp? I can't stand Nova Corp, okay? The team thinks they can help them, but SURPRISE they don't. Instead, they try to destroy them.
Episode 4
We're already at episode four! The portals, dude.... It was so cool. We love saving the world!
There's a scene of the team getting together now, and they're fighting the zombies and fighting Wanda's whole crew trying to protect the Hulk that is holding all of the Infinity Stone's power. I'm still a little unsure about this detail. Was that Hulk Hulk? I know they mention that Bruce Banner was a good guy or something. There was a brief moment where they emphasize the past tense. I was still a little confused by that. I'm guessing it's just Hulk, and Bruce is gone. I don't know.
The scene where Blade is swiping the sword, and the sword goes across his face. In the blade of the sword, you see Khonshu. I freaked out. That scene was so good. Chills. I got chills. It was iconic.
Zombie Thor? Terrifying. You definitely do not want him coming after you. You are a goner.
My last three notes that I jotted down while watching were:
"YO WHAT?"
"Did they for real save the world?"
"YO IT'S LIKE WANDAVISION! A FAKE WORLD! OMG, OMG, OMG!"
The ending of this show is very well done. I love the cliffhanger. I love that you just see Kamala with her friends, and she's reliving the whole zombie apocalypse However, Kate and RiRi are like, "what are you talking about?" The little flashes of seeing the zombies for real and seeing that what she's seeing is not her actual reality were amazing. Of course, the jump scare of Zombie Wanda is incredible. It did scare me for a moment.
The Cliffhanger Ending
Going back and thinking about it, Zombie Wanda, when she's pretending to be (or is? i'm unsure) healed Wanda, is trying to tempt Kamala to join her. She wants to team-up with her. She keeps mentioning that she needs Kamala's help to save everyone and bring the world back to normal. Obviously, she's not actually trying to heal the world. We knew that was a lie. However, she's using Kamala's powers to be able to strengthen her own reality shifting/ morphing, whatever you call that, and she's created a mask over what's actually happening. It's a similar magic that we saw in Wandavision or in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Wanda alters reality to get what she wants. She doesn't actually try to fix it. It was pretty cool.
Then, we see RiRi breaking through the make believe. Is Riri still alive for real? Or is that another type of created image, this time from Kamala? I believe it really is RiRi, and she's trying to snap Kamala out of it. But I don't know. It ended on a cliffhanger. We simply don't know. I love that though. I love that they didn't give us an answer, and I love that it's creepy and unsettling. I loved it.
Final Thoughts/Rating Marvel Zombies
Overall, I thought it was incredibly animated, and the storytelling was so good. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and I loved seeing these characters interact that we necessarily haven't seen interact before. I thought it was fun, I thought it was creepy and unsettling, I thought it was emotional, and it was really action-packed. If I'm gonna rate it, I think I'll have to give it probably a 3.5/5. It was good. It was solid. I don't really have any notes, but I don't feel like ranking it higher. You should still go watch it. It's really fun. Plus, it doesn't take that long. It took about two hours for me to watch the entire thing. Happy watching!
